The storage battery

The storage battery is the centre of onboard electrosystem Audi 80. Various consumers of a food use a stock of its energy, and the storage battery from the generator is charged.

Work principle

The electrode (lead plate) contacts to the dissolved sulfuric acid (electrolit) and gives under the influence of a solution positive ions, that is электрически charged частцы, to electrolit. Thereby between electrolit and a lead plate electric pressure is created.

However the pressure created as a result of "voluntary" transition of charged particles, not enough, and on the accumulator submit зарядное pressure. As a result of it sulphate of lead of the discharged accumulator room of the battery turns on a positive electrode in диоксид lead, and on negative – to spongy lead. Simultaneously in electrolit sulfuric acid, an external sign of almost complete process of gymnastics – occurrence of vials of gas is again formed.

At an accumulator discharge there is a return process. Диоксид lead of a positive plate and spongy lead negative again turn to lead sulphate, and sulfuric acid is spent, and water is formed. Therefore with a discharge of the storage battery the acid density decreases.

Designation of the storage battery

In models Audi 80 with 4 and 5-cylinder engines the storage battery is located behind on the right in a motor compartment. In models with the 6-cylinder engine: the accumulator is located at the left ahead in a motor compartment. On installation sites it is protected by a cover.
On Audi 80 following storage batteries are established:

  • 12 В/40 Aч, typical number 54045 (all 4-cylinder engines)
  • 12 В/63 Aч, typical number 56318 (5 and 6-cylinder engines)

Parametres of the storage battery

Pressure and capacity: in a designation 12 В/40 Aч the first (12), of course, specifies pressure. Behind inclined line the current strength which the accumulator is capable to give for a time unit is resulted – Aч means ampere-hours. It is the nominal capacity of the battery measured according to standard conditions. In practice it is necessary to count only on 2/3 specified ampere-hours; at older accumulator only on half.

Current of cold scrolling: number 220 And or 300 And specifies a current strength which the storage battery can give at temperature a minus 18С.

Typical number: the five-place number serves at all German manufacturers of storage batteries for accumulator identification. For Audi corresponding numbers is 54045 or 56318. The first (5) means pressure of the storage battery 12 Century the Following then figures 40 or 63 specify accumulator capacity. Both last figures designate constructive signs, such as model, полюсность, a hose for removal of gases and отбортовку.
