The fuel pump

At all versions of engines Audi 80 fuel pump with an electric drive is established in the case топливозаборника, located below in a fuel tank. It receives an electric food through the relay of the fuel pump. It is necessary to mention containing in the block of management of system of ignition/injection switching-off of the storage battery which ensures functioning of the pump only when the engine works.

Switching-off of the storage battery should prevent ignitions because of the fuel which has flowed out as a result of failure or road accident.

Search of malfunctions of the fuel pump

So it is possible to check up, whether submits fuel the fuel pump: on a socket place at the left near to a shock-absorber rack (here it is shown on an example of the car with system of injection KE-III-Jetronic) to disconnect the fuel bringing pipeline (2). A hose (1) to put on bringing pipeline and to lower the free end in any capacity.
3 – the fuel drain pipeline;
4 – the ventilating pipeline from a fuel tank to a tank with the activated coal.

  4. If the work sound the pump, possibly, is serviceable is audible. If it was audible nothing, it is necessary to check up, whether fuel arrives:
  5. Models with the 4-cylinder engine and system of injection Mono-Motronic: to disconnect a tube conducting to the block of preparation of a gas mixture, in a place штуцерного connections. To put on a hose proceeding from a fuel tank, the extension piece and to lower its end in any capacity.
  6. The assistant should include a starter at this time. Now fuel should arrive.
  7. Models with the 4-cylinder engine and system of injection Digifant: to disconnect bringing pipeline ahead on the distributive pipeline, to put on a hose-extension piece and to lower the free end in any capacity.

  9. Models with the 5-cylinder engine and system of injection KE-III-Jetronic: to Weaken screw connection on bringing топливопроводе – to keep in readiness a rag, to clean following gasoline.
  10. Even at the idle engine now should act a few gasoline because the system of giving of fuel is under pressure thanks to the fuel accumulator.
  11. If appears nothing, the assistant should include a starter.
  12. Now the fuel pump should start to submit gasoline.
  13. All models: if moves nothing, it is necessary to check the multicontact tip above on a protective flange of a fuel tank and to find out, whether receives the pump power supplies:
  14. To turn away a rug of a luggage compartment.
  15. To remove a black metal cover.
  16. To remove the multicontact tip.
  17. To check up вольметром or a control lamp, whether is available between штекерными contacts 1 and 4 (a brown and greenish-yellow wire) pressure approximately in 12 V.Dlja of measurement is necessary, that the assistant has included a starter (the transmission lever in neutral position, the car on a lay brake).
  18. If the pump does not work, despite food receipt, means, it is faulty (to remove and replace).
  19. If a food under suspicion the pump relay in the central switchboard gets does not arrive. Its check is described in the head body electrosystem.
  20. Other reasons can be: defective conducting to the relay or the pump, the hammered or bent hose топливопровода, hammered the filter of rough clearing or the fuel accumulator.

Removal of the fuel pump

On an example of this opened fuel tank it is shown, how the fuel pump acts in film. However the special tool (1) which turns an internal part of the case (топливозаборника 2) a little to the left is for this purpose necessary. The tool should get the paws (arrow) to dredging on an internal part.

For installation of the fuel pump (1) with an internal part of the case топливозаборника (2) in an external part (3) it is necessary to observe correct position of installation: on front-wheel models Audi the mark in an internal part of the case топливозаборника should be opposite to a mark in an external part (arrows on the left illustration). On all-wheel drive model Audi the double mark in an internal part of the case топливозаборника should settle down opposite to a mark in an external part (arrows on the right illustration).

It already concerns those kinds of works which the workshop because the fuel pump is taken out together with an internal part of the case топливозаборника should carry out, and it can be taken out from an external part топливозаборника only by means of a special key 3307. The one who can hire a similar key, should operate as follows:

  1. To remove the multicontact tip.
  2. To squeeze fixing plates on a tip of the drain pipeline and to remove a hose.
  3. To turn off submitting топливопровод.
  4. To turn on plastic накидную a nut. As a rule, it sits very densely. Therefore it is necessary to take possible more stupid screw-driver, to put it to one of edges of a nut and to weaken a nut lungs постукиваниями a hammer on a core of the handle of a screw-driver. If necessary to repeat on other sides.
  5. Now it is possible to raise a protective flange of a fuel tank a little.
  6. On an inside of a protective flange (as well as outside) to squeeze fixing plates on a tip of the drain pipeline and to extend a hose downwards.
  7. To disconnect the tip from the fuel gauge.
  8. To establish a special key 3307 on a case inside топливозаборника and to turn it to the left against the stop.
  9. To take out the fuel pump with an internal part and a protective flange from a tank.
  10. Precisely to remember to (note) position of installation of the pump, tubes, wires and bandages of wires because at installation all elements should be again collected precisely in the same kind.
  11. After a detachment of the delivery pipeline (position at installation) it is possible to disconnect the fuel pump from an internal part of the case топливозаборника. It occurs differently depending on a pump variant:
  12. The 60-millimetric pump: to turn on the left a grid located below on an inside of the case топливозаборника, to take out the fuel pump. At installation the ledge sideways on the pump should enter into a groove. To watch a sealing ring.
  13. The 40-millimetric pump: to squeeze blocking bracket above on an internal part of the case топливозаборника, to take out the pump. At installation the pump can be put only in one position.
  14. It is necessary to pay attention: at front-wheel models Audi 80 mark in an outer side should be opposite to an unary notch (mark) in an inside. At all-wheel drive models it should be opposite to a double notch.
  15. Internal part again to tighten by means of a key 3307. To establish other details.
  16. Position of a protective flange at installation: the arrow on a flange should be opposite to a mark in a fuel tank.
